When streaming platforms started taking center stage in our lives, it gave hope to filmmakers across the world. That maybe one day, their independent labour of love could be screened for millions of people without a theatrical run.

Ten years later, what do we have to show for it?

Not a lot. There are thousands of films lying around on hard disks. Netflix or Prime might just buy it, but then the film gets buried under their endless scroll after a week goes by. Or stuck in a revenue sharing agreement that barely pays the bills.

YouTube and Vimeo releases gather millions of views, but it doesn’t always mean financial success. Beyond the obvious, there is Mubi or a crowd-funded release. One is close to impossible and the other remains a pipe dream for many films. The lack of easy-to-access and transparent avenues for film distribution end up killing the funding for independent cinema.

None of this was on my mind when I directed and released my first ever film - Ghich Pich. But I did learn a lot about how films are distributed across platforms and ecosystems when I tried to put mine out into the world. And going through this rollercoaster of emotions is what led to Brew TV coming into the picture.
